Happy International Women’s Day!
I am a young, female business owner and entrepreneur and I own a bike shop. I ride a bike with flowers on it, wear pink bike clothes, paint my nails and do more bike repairs in a summer than most people do their entire lives. I love what I do, and I am proud of the business I have created.
One of the best parts of being a female bike shop owner is the way in which I can empower other women and girls to find happiness on a bike. The highlights are seeing a young women get her first mountain bike, celebrating the success of mastering a two wheeler with excited young girls and teaching a group of ladies how to ride faster, and with more confidence than ever before.
Like any profession, there are challenges and rewards being a female bike shop owner. Some days my abilities and skills are doubted, and my knowledge challenged. People make assumptions that my husband or brother or father must own the shop, and that I am no more than the girl that works the cash register. I meet these challenges with courage and patience and take them as an opportunity to educate, and highlight what women are capable of.
Along with the challenges come many rewards. I get to work in an industry where women are driving change and pushing the boundaries, I am surrounded by a community of women who run their own businesses, lead community groups and spearhead local initiatives and projects, and I get to have a positive impact on peoples lives ever single day.
Happy International Women’s Day to all women. May this be a day where you recognize your own accomplishments, empower the younger generation and thank those who support and celebrate women in sport, business and life!
